How to Fix "Outdated Server" and "Outdated Client" in Minecraft Java Edition
"Outdated client" means your game is older than the server. "Outdated server" means the server is older than your game. The fix is the same both ways: make your game version match the server version. In the Java Edition launcher you do that by creating an installation set to the server's version, or the server owner updates the server to match everyone.
Why this happens
Each Java Edition version has a protocol version number. When you connect, the game checks that number, and if your game and the server don't match, you get one of these errors. Some releases share a protocol number and can play together, but most version changes break compatibility. The launcher updates you to the newest release by default, so the error often appears the day a new version comes out, before the server owner has updated.
Step 1: Find the server's version
- Look at the server in your multiplayer list. If the server is older than your game, the list shows the server's version instead of the usual ping bars.
- Ask the owner or check the host's control panel. Most hosts show the version on the main server page.
- Check the server files if you run it yourself. The jar name or the first lines of the console log show the version.
Step 2: Switch your game to that version
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and select Java Edition.
- Go to the Installations tab.
- Click New installation.
- Give it a name, like "Friends server".
- In the Version dropdown, choose the exact release the server runs.
- Click Create, then go back to Play, pick the new installation from the dropdown next to the Play button, and launch.
Installations share the same game folder unless you give one its own game directory, so your single-player worlds show up in every installation. Opening a world in an older version than it was last saved in can damage it. Make a copy of any world you care about before loading it in a different version, or set a separate game directory for the new installation.
Step 3 (owners): Update the server instead
If most of the group is on the newest release, updating the server is usually easier than asking everyone to downgrade.
- Back up the world folder first.
- Replace the server jar with the new version and start it.
- Expect the world to be upgraded in place. You can't easily go back to an older version afterward, which is why the backup matters.
Snapshots vs releases
Snapshots are test builds of the next update. You turn them on in the launcher's Installations tab. Snapshots use different protocol numbers from releases, so a snapshot client can't join a release server and a release client can't join a snapshot server. If someone in the group turned snapshots on, ask them to switch back to "Latest release". Snapshots can also corrupt worlds, so keep them for test worlds.
What ViaVersion does
ViaVersion translates between protocol versions so newer clients can join an older server. Its project page says the base jar runs on Paper and Velocity, with related projects for Fabric, Forge, BungeeCord, Sponge, and a standalone proxy. Companion projects (ViaBackwards and ViaRewind) cover older clients joining newer servers. Blocks and items that don't exist in the older version are shown as something close.
On the server side it only helps if the server owner installs it, and a plain vanilla server can't load plugins. The Via project also has a client-side mod, ViaFabricPlus, for players who use Fabric, but the simplest fix for a friend group is still to match versions.
Troubleshooting
- The version I need isn't in the dropdown. Older versions are listed but may be far down the list.
- I matched the version and still get the error. Check that you launched the new installation and not "Latest release". The selected installation is shown next to the Play button.
- The server and I are on "the same" version. Check the full number. Java Edition now uses numbers like 26.3, and a small update can still have a different protocol number from the one before it. Match the full version exactly.
- I'm using a modded launcher or a mod loader. The server still needs the same base version. Mod loaders add their own checks on top.
- Friends on Bedrock (phone, console, Windows Bedrock) can't join. That's a different game edition, not a version mismatch. Java servers need a bridge such as Geyser to accept Bedrock players.
- Something else is wrong. If you get "Connection timed out" instead, see our timeout guide.
Where Shulkerboxes fits (and doesn't)
Shulkerboxes is free server hosting for Minecraft: Java Edition friend groups, invite-only with a waitlist. Plan on everyone in the group running the same game version as your server. It is free because gameplay is recorded and de-identified into AI training datasets (details). If your group needs mods, plugins, or Bedrock, pick a host that says it supports them.
Have an invite code? Enter it on the home page. No invite yet? Join the waitlist and we will save you a spot.
FAQ
What does "Outdated client" mean?
Your game is an older version than the server. Switch to the server's version in the launcher.
What does "Outdated server" mean?
The server is older than your game. Either play on the server's version or ask the owner to update.
Will downgrading break my worlds?
It can. Opening a world in an older version than it was last saved in risks damage. Copy the world first.
Can I join any server version with ViaVersion?
On the server side, only if the owner installed it on a platform that supports it, such as Paper or Velocity. A vanilla server can't run it.
Why did this start today when it worked yesterday?
A new release probably came out and your launcher updated automatically.
